A Hispanic-serving Insitution (HSI) is an institution of higher education that has an enrollment of undergraduate full-time equivalent students that is at least 25% Hispanic. To become an HSI, an institution has to apply for designation via the US Department of Education.
San Diego Mesa College reached a 25% Latinx population in 2010 and obtained HSI status in 2014. Now, in 2019, more than 38% of our student population identifies as Latinx.

HSI designation has given San Diego Mesa College the opportunity to better serve Latinx students in transferring, obtaining Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) degrees, and becoming the next generation of educators and leaders.
All programs born out of HSI are accessible to all San Diego Mesa College students. Both Title III and Title V funds have impacted instruction in all areas of study. Through HSI funding, faculty may apply to receive professional development to incorporate high impact teaching practices, such as active learning and culturally responsive pedagogy.
